# The Efficacy of a Novel, Non-contact EKG in the NICU

**NCT ID:** [NCT04269044](https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT04269044)

## Key Facts

- **Status:** TERMINATED
- **Why Stopped:** The PI is no longer with the institution.
- **Study Type:** OBSERVATIONAL
- **Target Enrollment:** 10
- **Lead Sponsor:** Northwestern Medicine
- **Collaborators:** Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital
- **Conditions:** Electrocardiogram Electrode Site Reaction
- **Start Date:** 2020-09-08
- **Completion Date:** 2021-12-31
- **CT.gov Last Update:** 2026-04-15

## Brief Summary

This study aims to see how well a non-contact EKG compares to the EKG currently used in the special care nursery.

## Detailed Description

Current EKGs use sticky pads that attach to the skin, but these do not stick well to newborns under two days old and can cause skin irritation. Researchers are testing a new EKG system that works without stickers to see if it is accurate.

## Eligibility

- **Minimum age:** 0 Days
- **Maximum age:** 30 Days
- **Sex:** ALL
- **Healthy Volunteers:** Yes

```
Inclusion Criteria:
* Apgar at 5 min \>/= 7
* Admitted to the NICU
* Indication for standard EKG monitoring
Exclusion Criteria:
* Apgar \< 7 at 5 min
* Not in the NICU
* Not being monitored with standard EKG monitors
```

## Interventions

- **non-contact EKG** (DIAGNOSTIC_TEST) — ultra-sensitive, non-contact EKG pad will be placed beneath the infant

## Primary Outcomes

- **difference in heart rate** _(time frame: 1 hour)_ — we will compare the two heart rate figures from both EKG sources

## Locations (1)

- Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital, Lake Forest, Illinois, United States
