# Strengthen cough by forward flexion

**Goal (in five words):** Strengthen cough by forward flexion

**Official Title:** Effect of Forward Trunk Flexion in Patients With Parkinson's Disease on the Airway Defense System

**Trial ID:** [NCT06955377](https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT06955377)

## Key Facts

- **Status:** RECRUITING
- **Study Type:** OBSERVATIONAL
- **Sponsor:** General University Hospital, Prague
- **Target Enrollment:** 100 participants
- **Start Date:** 2025-02-18
- **Completion Date:** 2028-02
- **Conditions:** Parkinson Disease

## Summary For Families

They're looking at whether leaning the trunk forward helps the airway defense system in Parkinson's, for example by making coughs stronger and swallowing safer to lower the risk of choking or aspiration. The team will observe how a forward-flexed posture changes measures like cough strength and respiratory muscle pressures, because leaning forward can shift chest and abdominal mechanics and may boost peak cough flow and airway closure during swallowing. About 100 adults with Parkinson's, age 18 and up, are invited if they can reliably perform breathing and grip tests. People with major cognitive problems, poor lip seal, severe lung or unstable heart disease, other serious neurologic conditions, or hand deformities that affect grip are excluded.

## Eligibility

- **Minimum age:** 18 Years
- **Sex:** ALL

### Full Criteria

```
Inclusion Criteria:
* Diagnosis of Parkinson' s disease
* Age ≥ 18 years
Exclusion Criteria:
* Unreliable performance of MIP, MEP, or grip strength measurements, for example, due to cognitive deficits (assessed by the researcher)
* Inadequate lip seal
* Significant deformities of the dominant hand that could affect the accuracy of grip strength measurements
* Other severe neurological diseases apart from PD
* History of unstable cardiovascular disease
* Severe pulmonary disease
