# GLP-1 Drug Clinical Trials for Parkinson's

GLP-1 receptor drugs were first developed for type 2 diabetes and weight loss, but they have become one of the most closely watched repurposing stories in Parkinson's research. You may know them by names like Ozempic, Wegovy, Bydureon, or Byetta.

The interest comes from laboratory work and earlier trials suggesting these drugs may calm inflammation and help dopamine-producing neurons survive. Results so far are mixed: a large exenatide trial reported no clear benefit in 2024, but several GLP-1 drugs, including semaglutide and lixisenatide, are still being studied in Parkinson's.
